Leverage the Power of Holidays and Events with these Marketing Dates in Q4

The hardest thing in marketing is getting attention from enough prospects to generate a profitable response. One of the great things about holidays and live events is that large numbers of people recognize and participate in them. So when you join in with marketing for that audience, you feel like one of them.

As the fourth quarter of the year approaches, now is a great time to start exploring the holidays and other events that your company could leverage in your fall marketing campaigns.

Use this list of Q4 marketing dates and events to get inspired, generate ideas, and start building your campaigns for October, November, and December 2024.

Halloween

Halloween continues to be one of the most participated holidays of the year that isn’t a paid holiday. Its versatility for marketing opportunities arises from how vast the audiences are that do something for Halloween.

Kids and their parents dress up for trick or treat, as well as parties. Young adults might shun the candy, but definitely not the parties. And many workplaces inject costumes and other fun elements of Halloween into their activities that week.

Beyond that, the day has numerous forms of recognizable imagery, plus well-known fictional characters associated with it.

So whether you just want to have fun livening up a campaign with humor and imagery, or if you want to actually market to an audience that spends money for this holiday, every business can leverage Halloween in their marketing.

Election Day

Some businesses cater to particular political ideologies. For those businesses, election day is one of your best marketing opportunities. You can align with your audience and promote your products at the same time. Your followers will happily do business with you if they see you as someone who agrees with or advocates for the things they believe in.

Beyond that, almost any business can leverage the broader significance of election day. You can promote voting as something you hope all your customers do without picking or even hinting at any candidates or positions on issues.

You can also celebrate the freedom that election day represents, that we live in a country that allows us to select our own leaders. Just like your customers are free to vote, they are free to buy whichever of your products makes them the happiest.

Language related to voting and elections, and the imagery that coincides with it, can be integrated into marketing campaigns for nearly any business.

Veterans Day weekend

For many, Veterans Day is a paid holiday. And it often becomes a long weekend. The extra time people have on long weekends gives them opportunities to get holiday shopping done early. It also provides travel opportunities.

It’s also less somber than Memorial Day and a more appropriate time to thank veterans for their service and offer discounts, parties, and other cheerful things.

And you can pitch this as a great opportunity for everyone to get early deals and try new products.

Thanksgiving

This time-honored holiday weekend is the only 4-day weekend on the calendar for most people, and it initiates the final holiday shopping push.

But Thanksgiving is not Christmas, and you don’t need to lump them all together as “the holidays.” Thanksgiving has its own story, its own imagery, and its own traditions. It’s also the biggest travel holiday of the year.

If you ever considered paying for ads in an airport, this would be the time to try it.

Black Friday & Cyber Monday

Thanksgiving leads right into Black Friday and Cyber Monday through the following week. And for many retailers, this is their biggest sales season of the year.

Your goal should be to come up with something fresh and new every year for Black Friday. Did something work last year? Try to incorporate those elements again while altering the details to make it even better.

You can focus on existing customers, new customers, or both. You can promote new products, memberships and loyalty programs, gifts, or lead generation offers. Most people tend to be a little more free-spending during this time of year. That lower barrier to winning a customer means you don’t necessarily have to offer huge profit-draining discounts.

The main goal is to simply get seen, draw attention, and deliver a good customer experience.

Christmas

The weeks before led up to this, so by the time the actual day arrives, most of the money related to it has already been spent.

But, in the following week, many people will return products and want to exchange them for something else. Or, when they return items, they’ll be willing to buy a few things while they’re at the store. Have a plan to capture revenue from people who return items so you minimize any revenue reductions.

Also, people have seen so much Christmas-themed marketing that the cliches and tropes have worn thin in many cases. So make an attempt to not just do what’s already been done over and over. It’s hard, but any effort you can devote to this can pay off.

And remember — the goal here is revenue, but the secondary goal is to win new customers. This might be the only time of year you have a chance to be noticed by them. Win them over, and they will continue shopping from you the following year.

New Years

Again, the imagery and iconography here is well known. But as Christmas recedes in people’s memories, the new year is coming, and that means a shift in messaging needs to happen. So if you’re going to run a New Year’s campaign, it will need its own message, different deals and offers, and a plan to carry into January.

Q4 sporting events marketers can’t miss

World Series

Beyond holidays, Q4 brings numerous high profile sporting events. The first one comes right in October, with the Major League Baseball playoffs and World Series.

Use the Project Estimator

Baseball is the American pastime. And while not everyone “follows” baseball, just about everyone understands and relates to it. It has a near universal language that can be adapted to your marketing campaigns.

And, for the teams making a deep run, you can market even more strongly toward their local fans, even if your company is national. Be ready with a campaign to send out to cities with teams heading for the World Series, and you’ll stand out from the competition.

You can also send brand ambassadors to engage the people attending the games in person. Outside the stadium an ambassador will encounter thousands of people. This is a great opportunity to collect leads, run surveys, offer free trials, or give out samples.

Power Direct can help you set up a brand ambassador campaign for any live event.

NFL weekly games

NFL football continues to dwarf all other professional sports in terms of ratings. Because games happen weekly, they have more of an “event” vibe than other sports. For local markets, you can leverage this week after week.

To get really invested, you could even develop a campaign that invites consumers to participate every week in some way. With a front door marketing campaign, for example, you could have a weekly scratch off delivered on door hangers early in the season, with coupons and specials only valid for that week’s game. Keep in mind — the season begins in September, before Q4.

If your market has its own team, you can even hire players to represent your brand. When this works well, it works really well. You just have to choose the right player and hit the right notes for however you utilize them in your marketing.

NBA Cup

The NBA Cup is a brand new event. Its inaugural effort happened in 2023. Because basketball historically got very little attention the first two months of the season, the NBA created this new in-season tournament, which culminates in a championship in mid-December.

This year, the semi-finals happen December 14th in Las Vegas, and the final comes three days later.

It generated a lot of buzz in its first season, and thus gives you another avenue for getting the attention of your basketball-loving customers and prospects.

Local holiday events

There are probably more events this time of year than any other, unless the weather is too prohibitive in that area. Winter parades, harvest parties, football parties, nonprofit events — every community features numerous opportunities for savvy marketers to get out there and engage with people doing something they enjoy.

Your company can engage with local events in several ways.

You can sponsor events, and then leverage the attendee lists of contact information for follow-up marketing, if they make that available.

You can also show up with brand ambassadors to engage passersby. Or for certain types of events, you could set up a booth and interact with attendees.

Look for upcoming events in a city or locality you’re wanting to reach, and figure out how to participate in a way that will bring positive attention and generate a response you can monetize.

Local music festivals

Professional sports draw one type of crowd, and music festivals draw another. These events always want sponsorships, so that’s one way to get the attention of festival-goers. And once again, you can create a live brand ambassador campaign.

We keep bringing this up, because experiential marketing does what no other type of marketing can do. It’s in-person, direct communication. Nothing is more memorable or has a greater impact on the prospect than that.

Here’s a terrific resource for finding music festivals across the country.

Local sports events

In some places, local sports draw even bigger crowds than some professional sports.

These could be lesser-known sports like roller hockey and rugby. Or, they could be events like high school football, which runs its championship matches usually in late November or early December. In some communities, these are the most important events of the year.

If you can find a way to participate in a way that draws positive attention to your brand, these sorts of events can be big winners..
