OOH Marketing Trends in 2026

Out of home marketing has been booming in recent years, both in usage and in customer engagement. But the times keep changing, as does the technology, and you can expect to see some big shifts in OOH marketing in 2026 and beyond.

Let’s take a quick trip through some of the expected OOH marketing trends anticipated for 2026.

Integration of OOH with AI

AI is about much more than asking a machine to answer a question, or a way to avoid having to write your own ad copy. For OOH marketers, look for more applications of AI empowering personalized and adaptive marketing tactics in the coming years.

It goes without saying that these methods will mostly work only with digital billboards and street-level OOH venues that can change based on external factors.

For example, with its ability to access data from traffic and weather sources, AI can optimize particular billboard advertisements based on what’s happening. A company might write a series of ads for different traffic conditions, different times of day, and different weather patterns, and let the AI determine which ones to show based on what’s happening.

AI could also be used to personalize ad copy based on local events, such as a sports team playing or winning a big game, a holiday, a festival, or other references local drivers and pedestrians would recognize.

This real-time application of AI will result in more attention to your OOH ads, and more engagement.

Increased emphasis on in-person connections

As consumers continue to be bombarded with screens and digital marketing, they’ll crave real human interactions more than ever.

OOH marketing will broaden in coming years to include in-person engagement. In other words, experiential marketing will blend with traditional OOH marketing strategies.

For example, you could have a brand ambassador engaging with passersby near a street-level OOH kiosk or nearby billboard. You might send out an array of brand ambassadors to targeted neighborhoods or specific addresses within a certain radius of a strategically placed billboard.

The ambassadors could reference that billboard as part of their introduction, and then introduce a product or initiate a data collection survey.

This highly creative form of multichannel marketing will surprise consumers and feel fresh and new.

Power Direct operates a nationwide network of brand ambassadors that companies can use to pitch products and services, collect data, or conduct in-person follow-up or lead generation.

More interactive ads

Another trend that’s been growing for a while and that you can expect to see more of is interactive ads. With mobile devices, you can get consumers to interact directly with your ads through the use of QR codes, tiny URLs, and other ways of getting customers to your landing pages.

This approach is especially effective in places like airports, buses, and transit stations where kiosks and well-placed ads along busy walkways attract lots of eyeballs. When not driving, people can easily stop, engage, and respond immediately to ad messages that get their attention.

Autonomous vehicles will force OOH marketing innovation

This is the big one. This is new. And it will only increase in importance in the coming years. There has been much debate and consternation about the viability and safety of autonomous vehicles, and in some ways, the jury is still out.

But it does appear that these will be making their way into the mainstream. And if they do, it will likely mean a complete re-imagining of what OOH marketing is and does.

Use the Project Estimator

Imagine riding in autonomous vehicles as your daily routine. What would change? For one, you wouldn’t have to look at the road or the surrounding environment. You could stare at your phone, talk to other passengers, read, sleep, or daydream. The passive attention that most billboards — digital and analog — now receive from most drivers would decline.

That would decrease the impressions from those billboards.

However, a case can also be made that not having to worry about driving might actually increase out of home marketing engagement. Consumers could now engage with billboards immediately, something they can’t usually do if focused on driving. With effective and attention-getting OOH ads — especially digital OOH — permanent passengers may even come to look forward to cool and creative billboards they can now enjoy, free from worries about distracted driving.

Billboards break the boredom of the road, and this can work to your advantage when no one is driving the car.

Still, you’ll have to work hard to get people’s attention away from their phones and other in-car pursuits. With AI, you may eventually be able to personalize ads on the screens of the car’s dashboard to individual drivers.

Whatever happens, it would be unwise to assume that traditional static billboards will continue to deliver as they always have. AVs will compel OOH industry innovation.

And if engagement with traditional OOH declines because of AVs, you’ll always be able to reach them at the front door.

Street level OOH will continue high-tech experimentation

Street level OOH marketing has become its own little micro-channel in recent years, and with high-tech advancements, the opportunities to get attention and draw a crowd will continue to expand.

We’ve already seen how some of the tech advances like augmented reality and other forms of interactivity can draw a crowd. Since pedestrians don’t have to worry about traffic, they are free to stop and engage with a compelling street level ad.

One of the most recent eye-catching OOH ads was used by Lionsgate to advertise the film Now You See Me Now You Don’t.

The ad features what acts like a real-life hologram of the stars of the film. They talk to you, act like they can see you, and even offer to take a selfie with you that you can then access through a QR code on the screen. The ultra-lifelike and 3D-like display surprises and delights everyone who sees it.

Start thinking about places you could use something like this, such as a busy street corner or a big local event.

More attention devoted to high-traffic events and locations

As more consumers crave live events and real-life experiences, the opportunities to use OOH marketing at big events and high-traffic locations will become more lucrative.

Think about using temporary kiosks, timely billboards, adaptive digital ads, and also brand ambassadors to engage people at big events such as:

  • Pro and college sports events
  • Concerts
  • Festivals
  • Political rallies

Any event that draws tens of thousands of people has the potential to provide a big advertising boost, and OOH ads are the most effective way to achieve it.
